Guilt we are alive  
 
I'm writing this 
to all volunteers like me

Since day one 
You've given all 
To the tragedies 
that you see 
You've helped so many 
You've done so much 
But so great is the need 
You feel it's never enough 
 
Theres a great unmet need 
Its our families & ourselves 
We need to eat 
We need to sleep 
We need humility 
to ask for help 
 
So many of us will never unsee 
The visions that haunt our minds 
The dreams the memories 
There's no place of peace we can find 
 
The guilt of living When so many died 
It's a pain so hard to take 
So we try to earn the life we have 
And never stop to take a break  
 
We suffer in silence 
Stay busy to numb our pain 
Knowing this tragedy has changed us 
And things will never be the same  
 
A part of us drowned 
but our bodies survived 
Now we are walking victims 
Guilty that we are alive  
 
So strong is the guilt 
I would give my own life 
To bring back a child 
a husband or a wife  
 
I know many of you 
Feel the same way 
Just to bring back one 
Your life you would gladly trade  
 
We don't realize that our guilt Is 
destroying what we most love 
Our families are hurting too 
Some are even ready to give up  
 
Let's not leave a trail of pain behind 
While we are trying to save lives  
And let's stop trying to pay a price 
Because we survived
